Being a part of something special

If you completed this year’s Asda Foundation Yorkshire Marathon or 10 Mile, our incredible volunteer, Sharon Rogerson, may have presented you with your hard-earned medal.

Being a runner herself, Sharon often finds herself volunteering at her local Parkruns when she is injured or unable to run, and this year she joined the Eventeers team at the 2019 Yorkshire Marathon Festival for the first time.

“As I was marshalling a 10 mile and marathon distance, I thought it was especially important to personally present the medals to make it special for the runners who have just run that far. They deserve it and it’s their day.”

As a solo volunteer, Sharon worked as part of the finish area team to help thousands of this year’s runners receive their goody bags, present them with medals and make sure they got their much-needed hydration.

“The thing I really liked about volunteering at the Yorkshire Marathon Festival was the camaraderie and banter with my group as we were all runners sharing our stories and experiences. I felt so honoured to be a part of so many runners’ achievements, celebrating with them, presenting them with their very much earned medal and if requested, a comforting hug.”

Sharon was also able to be a part of those extra special moments when friends and fellow runners from the charity she supports finished their 10 mile and marathon distances, and she was able to present them with their medals.

“I would recommend volunteering to anyone. It is a great experience and without volunteers, races wouldn’t run or be the epic events they are. You don’t need any special skills, the race staff give you all the information you need and all the support. You just need willingness to get involved, get stuck in, have a laugh, shout encouragement and be very prepared to lose your voice! You meet some great people and make some good friends.”
