Emma Sheehan, 23, from Crosspool, Sheffield took part in 2016's event after losing her dad to cancer just weeks before the event. In a bid to raise funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, Emma signed up to the event in 2015, unaware that by the time the day came around, her dad Dave, 56, would no longer be with them.
“Back in June 2015 when he was first diagnosed, I knew that I had to do something to raise money in support of this incredible hospital that had looked after us all so well. I signed up for The Plusnet Half Marathon and vowed to raise money for the place which had extended dad’s life so that we were able to spend those precious final months with him.”
Her cystic fibrosis can make breathing difficult and leave her struggling with injuries, but student Emily Burgin was determined to complete her first half marathon in Sheffield to raise money for a fellow sufferer.
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease caused by a faulty gene.
Emily said: “My lung function is lower than that of most people. When it was PE at school I was told I could sit it out but I want to run races to show that people with CF can do these sort of things.”
