Rugby’s Rory urges runners to tackle new Asda Foundation Leicester 10K

Leicester Tigers legend Rory Underwood is to officially start the city’s newest charity road race, it was announced today.

Runners from across the region are getting ready to pull on their trainers for the Asda Foundation Leicester 10K on Sunday 3rd September.

England’s biggest and most successful rugby union club is getting behind the event with the help of Tigers fans and volunteers who will be taking part in the event to support the community work of Leicester Tigers Foundation.

The event, launched earlier this year by actress and television presenter Terri Dwyer, is expected to hand local charities a major cash boost.

It is the latest addition to the successful Asda Foundation 10K Series, which includes runs in Nottingham, Sheffield, Lincoln, Leeds, York, Hull, Burnley, King’s Lynn and Bury.

They are organised by Run For All, part of the legacy of the late Jane Tomlinson, who raised nearly £2m for charity by tackling a string of gruelling challenges despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer.

Rory, 54, who scored 134 tries in 236 first team appearances for the Tigers, said: “I am delighted to be involved with this new charity run. Jane Tomlinson’s achievements were amazing and I hope many people will be inspired by her example and take on this challenge to support a good cause of their choice.

“The route looks great and I wish everyone who takes part the very best of luck.”

Lynne Preston, Run For All Event Manager, said: “We are very grateful to Rory for taking on the role of official race starter and are very much looking forward to bringing this new event to the city.”

The run will start and finish in Abbey Park and will take the runners across the Grand Union Canal and into the city centre, past the Richard III visitor centre, and the cathedral. Runners will then twice cross the River Soar before ending with a final lap of the park.
