Determined Lynda gets ready to overcome yet another challenge
In a wheelchair aged 21, broken pelvis at 38 – marathon runner at 50.
Lynda Gent has overcome a number of challenges in her life and on 8th October she will aim to conquer another one – The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon.
Lynda will be raising money for cancer research after losing the majority of her family to the illness. The loss of her Mum pushed Lynda to get off the couch, and step into her trainers to run the Race For Life: “I knew I could walk it but my goal was to run it!.”
With her parents photographed on the back of her running shirt, Lynda will be running in memory of her beloved family members: “I’m sure they will be with me every step of the way”. Her supportive sister and two nieces will be by her side on the day.
Losing family isn’t the only battle Lynda has faced. Diagnosed with fibromyalgia at the age of just 21, Lynda came to rely on a wheelchair until her late 30s. A broken pelvis in 2005 also caused Lynda to temporarily lose the mobility in her legs.
The Bridlington Road Runner member says: “I can honestly say running has changed my life. I’m fitter now then I’ve ever been. Running has brought me many things, but I’m most grateful for the people I’ve met through it”.

Look, we’re on the telly – again!
Make sure you practise your finish line smile because you might be on television.
The excitement, colour and drama of the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon will once again be captured in a special highlights programme to be screened on Channel 4. Broadcast dates and time will be confirmed nearer race day.
Dream Team Television will produce a documentary of the race on Sunday 8th October.
Hosted by former Olympic athlete Katharine Merry and TV presenter Kevin Harris, It will also be shown on Sky Sports and other digital channels.
Lynne Preston, event manager with race organiser Run For All, said: “We are delighted that the marathon is again to be the subject of a TV programme that reflects all that’s best about this super event – a first class race, fantastic route, friendly crowds and some truly inspiring stories from our runners. It’s sure to be a great watch.”
Good things come in under 3
Runners with a fair measure of talent, stamina and determination will be targeting a sub three hour marathon on Sunday 8th October.
Two runners aiming to crack the barrier for the first time are Andy Yu, 33, and Gary Tew, 34.
Andy completed the Yorkshire Marathon 2016 with a personal best of 3 hours and 3 minutes - almost a 31 minute improvement on his London Marathon time.
He said: “With a time so close to breaking 3 hours, I decided to enter once again to try and achieve the everyman's marathon milestone of a pb beginning with the number 2.”
Garry has already completed two 10ks this year with times of 37.18 and 37.53. Having clocked 3.03.14 in the Yorkshire Marathon 2015, and 3.04.08 in 2016, he will be going all out to dip under three hours.
Matthew Alderson clocked 2:34 in this year’s London Marathon so naturally he will be targeting sub three hours at York – but it’s not that simple. Matthew plans to tackle an ironman triathlon in Barcelona just the week before the Yorkshire Marathon.
Whatever target you are working towards, good luck.
