Jane Tomlinson's Pennine Lancashire 10K Launched

Jane Tomlinson's 2010 Pennine Lancashire 10k launchFormer Olympic athlete Steve Cram joined Mike Tomlinson in Blackburn for the launch of the inaugural Jane Tomlinson’s Pennine Lancashire 10K.

The Pennine Lancashire 10K, a Run For All event, will be held on Sunday July 11th, and will have places for 5,000 entrants of all abilities from the age of 15.

The event follows in the footsteps of the hugely successful Leeds 10K and York 10K and the newly launched Hull 10K.

Mike Tomlinson launched the event at Blackburn Town Hall on behalf of his family.

Mike said:
“We are absolutely thrilled that with the support of Elevate and the Pennine Lancashire authorities we are able to bring Run For All to Pennine Lancashire. In creating Run For All, Jane wanted others to share the excitement and fulfilment she had experienced in participating in fundraising events. Now 5,000 people have the chance to share that experience in Pennine Lancashire and hopefully raise thousands of pounds for local charity. The Run For All event in Leeds is now in its fourth year and has raised over £1 million for charity since it began. In both Leeds and York the atmosphere on race days is absolutely fantastic with thousands of people of all abilities and all walks of life coming together for good causes.
“We are really looking forward to what we know will be a truly memorable day in Blackburn on July 11th.”

Pennine Lancashire includes the boroughs of Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle, Ribble Valley and Rossendale, and the 10K is an event designed to benefit all these areas and inspire and include people across the communities.

The inaugural run will take place in Blackburn. The 2010 Pennine Lancashire 10K will start and finish from the stunning 480-acre Witton Park, Blackburn and the course will take in the highlights of the historic town centre, passing King George’s Hall, the spectacular Grade II listed Cathedral and over the iconic Wainwright Bridge.
Cllr John David, Deputy Chair, PLACE, Pennine Lancashire Leaders said:
“We are delighted to launch the inaugural Jane Tomlinson Pennine Lancashire 10K, which promises to be a truly memorable event. Blackburn is the first town in Pennine Lancashire to host the run and in the coming years it will travel to other destinations in this beautiful part of the country. The Jane Tomlinson Appeal and other partner
charities supported by the race are all committed to helping to make people’s lives better. Both here and abroad, their efforts make a real difference. By taking part, you will too.”

The Pennine Lancashire 10K will be based on the same principles as all Run For All events – a not for profit, community event which encourages people of all abilities to take part and raise money for whatever cause is important to them.
The Jane Tomlinson Appeal, which supports children’s and cancer charities, will also have a number of national and local partner charities which will share profits from the Pennine Lancashire 10K: The Christie, COCO, Derian House and East Lancashire, Pendle and Rossendale hospices.
Founder of COCO, former Olympic athlete Steve Cram MBE, joined Mike Tomlinson for the launch, which included a charity mascot race.

Steve Cram said:
“I am delighted to support Jane Tomlinson’s Pennine Lancashire 10K. I was lucky enough to call Jane a friend and like many was touched by her determination and drive to make a difference to many millions of people's lives, despite battling with her own cruel illness.
“I am proud to be associated with the event and hope the cause and most importantly the memory of such a special lady like Jane Tomlinson will motivate everyone to want to take part. Whether you're a veteran to road races or a first timer, I look forward to seeing you all there in July. Please give your full support to the event.”

The Pennine Lancashire 10K also has the support of Yvette Livesey, partner of the late music mogul Tony Wilson.

Yvette Livesey said:
“There are so many deserving causes that runners can support but one especially close to my heart is dedicated to my late partner Tony Wilson. Tony was treated at The Christie after developing kidney cancer and I will be eternally grateful for the outstanding care he received from the hospital’s dedicated team of staff. All monies raised for the hospital will go towards
the pioneering work carried out by Professor Robert Hawkins who is carrying out research into kidney cancer and into innovative methods of treatment. I encourage as many people as possible to sign up to join ‘Tony’s team’ for the race and run in memory of a musical legend whilst raising money for a genuinely worthwhile cause.”

The 2010 Jane Tomlinson’s Pennine Lancashire 10K takes place on Sunday July 11th.
