Ready to take on either the Leeds Half Marathon on Sunday 13th May or Leeds 10K on Sunday 8th July? Leeds is quickly becoming the UK's favourite City break destination! So why not make a weekend of it?

How to Spend your pre-race saturday 

1. Enjoy some retail therapy 

The compact city centre will treat you to a plethora of fabulous shopping establishments all within an easy walkable distance of each other. Enjoy the City’s Market Stalls, Designer Stores, High Street Brands and many Independent Boutiques housed in breathtaking Edwardian and Victorian buildings. You might just find yourself a bargain!

2. visit Leeds Art Gallery

Save your pennies and enjoy FREE ENTRY to Leeds Art Gallery. The recently refurbished Leeds Art Gallery has the best 20th century collection outside of London and a colourful new wall painting commission for the Victorian staircase by Lothar Götz.

3. have a mosey around Kirkstall Abbey

Set in wonderful parkland along the banks of the River Aire, Kirkstall Abbey boasts gorgeous historic architecture amid a haven of wildlife and greenery. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the grounds, or walk along the river bank and see if you can spot the ducks. Keep an eye out for Kirkstall Abbey Markets which run one weekend per month between March and November.

4. visit Lotherton Hall – there’s Flamingos!

Flamingos in Leeds?! You’ll find them at Lotherton Hall along with over 480 individual birds, from more than 130 different species in their brilliant bird garden! There’s plenty more than just bird watching, enjoy the popular adventure playgrounds that are appropriate for all ages with climbing frames, zip wires, swings, roundabouts and plenty of seating close to the Stable Courtyard! Put on your walking boots and discover the wonderful gardens, spread over 8 acres. Sssh… Walk quietly along the perimeter fence of the Deer Park and maybe you'll see the herd of red deer grazing.

Harewood House’s breath taking grounds are home to numerous gardens including the Lakeside Garden and Himalayan Garden. The adventure playground offers hours of fun for children of all ages. However, don't miss your chance to visit Harewood Bird Garden - home to a range of exotic birds. You can even get up close to the penguins by helping the keepers feed them. Plus, make sure you visit the Harewood Farm Experience where young farmers can meet friendly alpacas, learn about pygmy goats and see the potbellied pigs enjoy a spot of lunch.

6. Have a laugh at Leeds’ favourite comedy club

Fancy relaxing to a spot of comedy the night before your BIG RACE? Get big laughs at the ever-popular HiFi Club in Leeds which offers early-evening comedy shows every Saturday starting at 7pm.

7. treat yourself to a Fine Dining experience

Looking for a tasty fine dining experience? Visit a vast array of fine dining restaurants scattered throughout the vibrant city centre. Check out Michelin Star restaurant, The Man Behind The Curtain which takes its Wizard of Oz inspired name to heart with an 11 course yellow brick road tasting menu that features everything from pork rinds to oysters.

8. Start Carb-Loading

Located just a few short miles away from your Leeds Half Marathon and Leeds 10K start lines, you will be treated to 700 acres of parkland, lakes and woodland to wonder through.

So you’ve smashed your run! Celebrate in style by getting out the bubbly in the glorious Yorkshire sunshine. Leeds has plenty of amazing bars to visit – not to mention a selection of roof top bars with stunning views of the city skyline. Visit The Alchemist for fun, tasty cocktails and a view not to be missed!
