Leicester Tigers captain and England rugby union international Tom Youngs set to officially start the Asda Foundation Leicester 10K.
Leicester Tigers captain and England rugby union international, Tom Youngs, will officially start the Asda Foundation Leicester 10K on Sunday 9th September.
The Tigers forward will be responsible for setting off the thousands of runners who will compete in the popular charity road race next month.
England and British & Irish Lions international, Tom, will get the race going at its Abbey park starting line and appears to be excited about the opportunity: "To open the event is a huge honour and I would like to say good luck to everyone who will be taking part" he said.
“While I’ll likely be recovering from our match against Newcastle Falcons the day before, I am keen to come along and support everyone by cheering them on.”
From the Abbey Park start line, runners will travel across the Grand Union Canal and into the city centre passing the Richard III visitor centre and cathedral. Runners will then twice cross the River Soar before ending with a final lap of the park.
Many of the runners taking part in the event will be representing the Tigers Foundation who are hoping the raise over £12,000.
The Tigers Foundation is a charity that helps make a positive difference to the lives and opportunities of 1000's of individuals and groups every year through its work in disability sports, community cohesion, health, and education.
“Last year, the Leicester 10K raised lots of money for the Tigers Foundation, which helped support programmes across the community. I wish the best of luck to all of our runners and hope that we can raise as much as possible to fund the foundation’s great work”, said Tom.
Leicester 10K runners are welcome to run for fun, for a charitable cause of their own choice or one of the event’s partner charities which include the Jane Tomlinson Appeal; CLASP, which provides support to people looking after a relative or neighbour with care needs; Macmillan Cancer Support; LAMP Mental Health Advocacy and Information and Vista, which supports people with sight loss.
Set to raise tens of thousands of pounds for charity, the Leicester 10K is part of the successful Asda Foundation 10K series, which so far in 2018 has seen runs in Lincoln, King’s Lynn, Burnley, Hull, Leeds, York and Nottingham with runs in Bury and Sheffield remaining.
The 10K road races are organised by Run For All, part of the legacy of the late Jane Tomlinson, whose grandparents and father lived in Leicester. She raised nearly £2m for charity by tackling a string of gruelling challenges despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer.
This year’s Leicester 10K is supported by Asda Foundation, Arla Protein, Up & Running, Alive Leisure, Runderwear, Aftershokz, bananakick, Hertz and Leicester Tigers Foundation.
