Leeds 10K - 2009 What a great day!

Leeds 10K Massed Start

Congratulations to all this year’s finishers and thanks to all our volunteers and supporters.

Dan RobinsonBritish marathon runner Dan Robinson was the first male over the line, in 30.51 mins. The first female was Victoria Graves, in 37.19 mins. Sixteen-year-old Hannah Cockroft from Halifax was the first wheel chair athlete home in 36.03mins.

The race was started by 10-year-old Megan Smith from Otley, West Yorkshire, and Nell McAndrew, a longstanding supporter of the event and of Jane’s Appeal.

Megan was asked to start the race in memory of her mum, Sue, who recently died of breast cancer and also for all those taking part in memory of loved ones.

Victoria Graves

Celebrity runners included actors John Altman, who plays “Nasty” Nick Cotton in the BBC’s EastEnders, and Dean Andrews, who plays DS Ray Carling in the BBC’s Ashes to Ashes series.

Leeds Rhinos legend Barrie McDermott and Leeds Uniteds Eddie Gray and British middle distance runner John Mayock, plus a host of local media celebrities were also among today’s 11,000 runners, .

Also among the elite entrants was Jack Jones who recently completed seven ultra marathons in seven days.

The Leeds 10K team would like to thank Leeds City Council, Clarion Solicitors, Asics, Logistik, Gatorade, Yorkshire Post, Real Radio, Leeds Metropolitan University and all the volunteers for their support, without which it would not be possible to stage the event.

Cllr John Procter, executive member for Leisure, Leeds City Council, said:

“The 2009 Leeds 10K Run For All had more runners than ever of all abilities taking part to raise funds for charity.  The event showcases the City of Leeds and its people at their best.  I am delighted and proud that the City Council has been involved since the Tomlinson’s first came to us with the concept for the event back in 2005.”

Nell McAndrew said:

“I've taken part in the Leeds 10K since the first one and it was fantastic to be asked to start today’s race and then run again. It's such a special day, always uplifting and emotional at the same time. There is always such a brilliant atmosphere among those taking part and the crowds cheering everyone on. But I always feel very emotional at the same time and so touched by all those who are taking part to fundraise and try to make a difference to the lives of others. And so often to remember someone very special in their lives, like Megan. It makes me think about my dad who was diagnosed with cancer almost five years ago, but is thankfully in remission.”

Leeds based leading law firm Clarion Solicitors LLP once again sponsored the Corporate and Team Challenges, which take place within the main Leeds 10K run.

BBC Sports Presenter Gabby Logan today joined Mike Tomlinson to launch the 2009 Leeds 10k: Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All and announced the fantastic £750,000 fundraising total for the 2008 event.

On Sunday 21st June 2009 it is hoped 11,000 will join the Run For All in Leeds and that the event will raise £1m for the charities supported by those taking part.

Gabby Logan said: "I am delighted to launch the 2009 Leeds 10k: Jane Tomlinson's Run For All. Having spent much of my childhood in Leeds it means a great deal to me to support an event here that is raising so much for so many charities. As President of Sparks, one of the benefiting charities, I know just how much good work is being done with the money raised through the Run For All".

Gabby and her husband Kenny Logan are presidents of Run For All partner Sparks, The Children’s Medical Research Charity.

Mike Tomlinson, who hopes, after the £750,000 triumph of 2008, the Leeds Run For All will raise £1m, said: "The whole team is thrilled at the success of the first two years. It is fantastic that in such a short space of time so much has been raised for charity."

He added: "It is fantastic to have Gabby's support. It is always nice to have links with successful Yorkshire people and having that support really makes a big difference to the profile of the Run For All and to the amount of money that is therefore raised for charity."

Also in attendance were Leeds City Council, returning sponsors and other benefiting charities for what will be the third consecutive Leeds Run For All.

Councillor John Procter, executive member for Leisure said: "The City Council is very proud to support and partner the Tomlinson family in the development of this event which has become a major annual sporting spectacular. Jane Tomlinson inspired thousands to believe that they themselves can make a big difference to those less fortunate whilst at the same time achieving personal goals which at times appear out of reach. I’m sure Jane would have been absolutely delighted with the response from the public to this her legacy fundraising event. With £750,000 raised for good causes in 2008 and a fantastic day enjoyed by all the 2009 event promises to be even bigger and better so good luck to everyone who is looking to take part."

Dirk Mischendahl, Founding Director of Logistik comments; "The Leeds 10k is an iconic occasion that truly captures the region, bringing the Yorkshire community together and making a considerable difference to a number of people’s live, and we are very proud to be a part of this inspiring initiative for the third year."

Leeds 10k Run For All would like to thank all of their sponsors for their ongoing support; including Leeds City Council, Clarion Solicitors, Gatorade, Logistik, Asics and Leeds Metropolitan University, without them this event would not be possible.

The inspirational Jane Tomlinson CBE

Jane Tomlinson CBE provided the inspiration for the 'Run For All' series. Award winning Jane was diagnosed with incurable cancer in 2000. Despite living in constant pain and frequently being very ill Jane participated in numerous high profile events raising a staggering £1.85 million for charity prior to her death in 2007. Jane’s dream was to establish legacy events so that other people could share in the thrill and excitement of taking part in mass participation events. Fortunately Jane was alive to see the first 'Run For All' event, in June 2007, for herself. She was thrilled to see so many people taking part and took enormous pleasure in waving them all off as they set out to cover the 10k course and then took great joy in welcoming everyone back at the finish. For Jane and many people taking part this was the highlight of the day. We are now expanding the series to take in more cities to ensure more and more people have the opportunity to take part and we look forward to you joining us.

A message from Mike Tomlinson

'Run For All' is an exciting series of mass participation events which are open to people of all abilities. Whether you run, walk, wheel or watch you will have the opportunity, along with thousands of others, to participate in fantastic, charitable events in major city centre locations. The success of The Leeds 10k has provided a template which will be replicated elsewhere to deliver thrilling sporting spectaculars. The events will not only allow you to aim for a very worthwhile personal goal but also allow you to raise funds for any charity of your choice. In addition all profits from our races will go to the charities. Follow in the steps of Jane and make a real difference to your life and the lives of others. So please come along and join in the fun, everyone will be made very welcome.
