The city of Derby was teeming with excitement this morning as thousands of participants flooded the city, to take part in two of the region’s flagship running events: the Ramathon and the RAM 5-Mile.
There was a thrilling display of speed and stamina as Gemma Steel stormed to victory for the RAM 5 Mile distance, setting a new course record of 28:08.
Marked by its lively and celebratory atmosphere, masses of spectators lined the streets of Derby to cheer on the runners, as participants of all ages and abilities took part in what is a highlight of the city’s running calendar.
Full Street proved a spectacular start and finish line for the Ramathon and the RAM 5 Mile, providing an electric environment for all involved.
And, while charity fundraising was the main intention of the day, the races also involved impressive feats by some of the region’s leading athletes in a both distances.
In the men’s Ramathon race, David Bishop triumphed with a time of 01:08:05, followed by Cameron Hannon as the runner up with a time of 01:09:18, and Nicholas Dennis coming third in 01:09:51.
For the women, it was Emily Smith who was first to the finish line in an impressive 01:22:26, with Nicola Stevenson coming second with a time of 01:25:07, preceded by Leonie Shipley who came in third at 01:25:26.
In the RAM 5 Mile, Joseph Booth triumphed with a time of 27:26, followed by Rome Doisneau as the runner up with a time of 27:57, and Damian Saunders coming third in 28:56.
Following Gemma Steel across the line, Molly Uren came second with a time of 30:14 by Molly Uren, and Joanne Stanfield third with a time of 31:39.
But it would not have been a truly successful event without the local and regional charities, who will benefit thanks to the impressive efforts of the many who took part, raising tens of thousands of pounds for multiple good causes in the process.
Participants were encouraged to fundraise for either a chosen charity, or one of the events’ partner charities, choosing from the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, PASIC, Over the Wall, Myaware, or the Derbyshire Cricket Foundation.
More than just a day of running, it also highlighted the incredible communities in and around the city, from running clubs, volunteers and schools, with all areas of the city showing their support working to encourage the runners across the routes.
The event was also supported by Derby City Council, BBC Radio Derby, JogOn, The Derby Runner, Arla Protein, High 5, Shokz, Coopah, Gradwell, Marathon Photos Live, Project Servator, and NK Motor Group.
