Christine is running her 7th Yorkshire Marathon this October - but this one will be her most important. She will be fundraising for the high-dependency unit at the RVI in Newcastle, as her son Adam was hospitalised there for 4 months following a serious motorbike accident in June 2024.
Following his accident, Adam's injuries were much more serious than initially thought, including a broken pelvis, broken ribs, and a damaged neck and spinal cord. After his lung collapsed twice, Adam had to be put on a ventilator, while the family was told that his chances of being able to walk again were getting less and less likely.
"During this time, Adam displayed strength and resilience that I never imagined he would possess."
But it was the staff that supported both Adam and the family in the ensuing months.
"Their calm and compassionate approach carried us through the most difficult of times and, while they could not give us false hope, their expertise and professionalism gave us strength and positivity."
When thinking of what might raise Adam's spirit, the staff helped them to set up Adam outside with all the necessary equipment to be reunited with the family dog, Barney.
At the end of September, Adam was transferred to the spinal unit in Middlesbrough, where he remained until January of this year, where he received excellent care and rehabilitation. He eventually started showing small signs of recovery, and can now walk short distances with crutches.
"I will undoubtedly hit a few walls during this year's marathon, probably around the 18-20 mile stage, but memories of Adam struggling during the first 4 horrendous weeks following his accident will be enough to spur me on."
