Denise is running this year's Yorkshire Coast 10K after her battle with cancer to get back into running.
Having always enjoyed running, Denise joined the Ackworth Road Runners in 2012, which she found improved both her physical and mental health. She made many friends, and became both a committee member of the club, as well as joint ladies captain for a few years.
However, in April of 2024, Denise found a lump in her breast. The doctor referred her to the hospital for further checks, and was diagnosed with breast cancer in June.
"I had always been diligent about checking and attending mammogram appointments, as I had lost my mum to breast cancer in 1987."
Her niece was also diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 (but is now thankfully in remission) so, due to her family history, Denise underwent genetic testing. Following this, she was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer.
"I had no symptoms, but count myself lucky that it was found...I was completely and utterly devastated and in shock."
In July 2024, Denise had a major operation to remove the ovarian cancer and her lymph nodes, which was followed by four months of chemotherapy.
"Messages, flowers, a listening ear, lifts to the hospital and back - I would not have got through it without them. I will never be able to thank them enough."
Then, in January of 2025, she had a double mastectomy to remove the breast cancer. She is still receiving treatment, but is determined to get out running:
"...it provides me with a sense of freedom..."
In March, Denise returned to training with steady walks, and followed it up with the NHS Couch to 5K. When she heard about the Ackworth Road Runners organising their annual trip to the Yorkshire Coast 10K, she knew that it would be her first run after recovery.
"A Yorkshire 10K with sea air, running with like-minded people, followed by fish and chips - a perfect comeback 10K."
But, Denise credits her recovery and her return to running to all those who helped her during her battle with cancer.
"I am eternally grateful to the NHS, Maggie's, my family and friends, not forgetting my running buddies for the love and support they have given me."
