Jason is preparing for the Sheffield Half Marathon while living with both spina bifida and Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) – conditions that affect his mobility, coordination, and energy levels. Even so, he’s committed to getting to the start line and showing that having health challenges doesn’t mean stepping away from personal goals.
His journey to this point has been far from straightforward. Jason grew up facing significant trauma and adversity, which he says had a ‘major impact on both my mental and physical health’, contributing to the complex challenges he still manages today.
‘There were moments in my life where simply getting through the day felt impossible,’ he says. ‘Running 13.1 miles would have seemed completely unrealistic.’
For Jason, this half marathon is not about proving doctors wrong or pretending things are easy. It’s about proving to himself that growth is possible – even with limitations.
Training has taken ‘patience, medical guidance, and careful pacing,’ he explains. But each step has reinforced why he’s doing this.
Jason’s motivation is simple: to show that a diagnosis doesn’t define your ceiling. By taking on this challenge, he hopes his story encourages even one person navigating illness or trauma to keep moving forward in whatever way they can.
