Greg will be running the 2026 Sheffield Half Marathon, for Whirlow Hall Farm, the very place where he is a team member.
Greg, has been part of the cafe staff team for almost four years, and first came to Whirlow as a volunteer after struggles with his mental health left him unable to finish his degree or work full-time.
“We are extremely proud to say that Greg graduated from the University of Hull with a BSc in Applied Animal Welfare Science earlier this year!”
Alongside training for the Half Marathon in March, he is training for a trek to Aconcagua, the highest mountain in South America and the tallest peak outside of the Himalayas. To prepare for these challenges, he runs 5K once a week with a running group, goes to the gym twice a week, and walks in the Peak District when he gets the time.
Greg has chosen to run the Half Marathon for Whirlow because of the support he has received over the years. Although Greg didn’t come to Whirlow through the traditional route, his experiences were similar to those of the young people we support, and a large part of what we do is aimed at helping youngsters avoid the difficulties that he experienced.
There is a growing mental health crisis among young people and Whirlow Hall Farm gives them the support they need, the space to grow, and a sense of belonging. We celebrate every one of their achievements with them so that, when they leave us, they do so with confidence, self-worth and excitement for their future.
Greg said “I’m excited to run for the Half Marathon to support Whirlow. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Whirlow has been truly inspirational in helping me become a more independent, confident, and sociable person, enabling me to make real progress and develop a more positive outlook on life.”
His hope for the future is to find a full-time role using his degree and working with animals. For now, they’re glad to have him still working in the cafe!
Greg has already raised over 70% of his target, but you can help him reach his full goal below:
Good luck, Greg!
