This August, Nick is taking on the Arla Protein York 10K as part of his quadruple challenge, in which he is taking on four major physical and mental challenges to raise vital funds for York Mind, a partner charity of the event. He is also taking on the Speyside Way Ultramarathon, a 24-hour non-stop gym challenge, and the National Three Peaks Challenge.
Since 2020, Nick has been living with the devastating effects of post-concussion syndrome after a series of head injuries he sustained while playing rugby. Over the following 3 years, the repeated concussions began to profoundly affect both his personal and professional life as he struggled with a myriad of symptoms, such as persistent migraines, memory loss, tinnitus, insomnia, anxiety, and depression.
"I remember speaking to a doctor in Edinburgh who said, 'It's like breaking your leg 14 times and expecting it to be the same' when referring to my brain and the number of times I was knocked unconscious in such a short period of time."
However, like many others with invisible health issues, Nick persisted, putting on a brave face and acting as though everything was fine.
"Because you can't physically see a panic attack, or a migraine, or depression, other people often don't notice. And I just keep pretending I was okay, even though I was struggling to keep my head above water."
In 2024, his health took a turn for the worse, resulting in him being admitted to hospital and requiring urgent medical care. This was a turning point for Nick - it allows him to access the right treatment and support to help him with his condition.
That's why Nick is taking on four major challenges this year to give back to the community that helped him so much.
"Frankly, I think so many people talk about mental health, but I want to do something that actually helps."
Nick has now returned to work, and is re-establishing a positive routine through fitness, friends, and family, as well as continuing treatment. By taking on these impressive feats, he hopes to help others to get the support they need.
