December 2025 marked 20 years since Selina lost her dad to suicide. At his funeral, the family asked for donations to Mind instead of flowers, and ever since, Selina has wanted to find a meaningful way to continue supporting the charity while honouring his memory.
In 2026, she decided to do just that by setting herself the challenge of running a 10K for Mind. When she heard about the Bury 10K, it felt like the perfect opportunity.
Looking back on her decision, Selina explains that running has also had a positive impact on her own mental health.
“It gives me time to clear my mind, reflect and challenge myself,” she says.
Being able to combine something that benefits her wellbeing with fundraising for a cause so close to her heart has made the challenge even more meaningful.
Over the last 20 years, Selina has seen a significant change in the way people talk about mental health. While she believes there is still much more work to do, she has noticed that stigma has reduced and that more people feel able to seek help when they need it.
By supporting charities like Mind, Selina hopes that even more progress can be made and that people know they do not have to face their struggles alone.
Selina is running not only in memory of her dad, but also in the hope that the funds she raises for Mind will help others access vital support. Ultimately, she hopes her efforts will help ensure that fewer families experience the loss that hers did.
