This October, Steve is taking part in his first ever marathon at the Altra Yorkshire Marathon to raise money for Macmillan.
Steve discovered running late in life at 43 years old. After doing almost no exercise for 20 years, he decided to try the local Parkrun one cold February morning in 2022 with his son:
"While it was tough, I loved every step of it."
Only months later, Steve decided to join the Northowram Pumas Running Club, providing his with a brilliant community, and helping him to quit smoking.
Steve decided to run the Yorkshire Marathon for Macmillan, as his sister was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery at only 43 years old. It was picked up purely by chance, as routine screening isn't usually offered until age 50.
"It hit our whole family hard, especially my 13 year old nephew, Harry."
However, breast cancer is something that Steve's family knows all too well. His mum Jan was also diagnosed five years ago following a routine mammogram. It had already spread to her lymph nodes but, thanks to swift surgery and care, she is now officially cancer free.
When Steve’s friend Drew signed up for the marathon – his first as well – Steve decided to bite the bullet and register for the race.
“I’ve never run a half marathon competitively and, before training started, I’d only ever hit the 13 mile mark twice. But, I felt like I had to scratch the 26.2-mile itch while I’m still fit enough – and I knew this was the cause to do it for.”
Now four weeks into their training, Steve and Drew are successfully hitting over 13 miles on their long runs, and are enjoying it far more than expected.
“We train together, and we’ll cross the finish line together.”
So far, Steve has managed to raise nearly £1,400 for Macmillan, and hopes to raise even more funds for the charity.
“I’ve been truly humbled by people’s generosity, their kind words, and the personal stories they’ve shared about their own experiences with cancer. These stories, and my family’s own journey, will be what carries me through every mile on 19th October.”
