In 2021, Oli’s life changed forever. At the age of just 33, he was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis, a rare and largely unknown autoimmune disease that can affect any organ in the body.
For Oli, it’s in his lungs – which makes the fact that he is running the Leeds Half Marathon with his sister Sophie a remarkable feat.
Oli says, “Sarcoidosis is so rare I’d never heard of it and I forgot the name as soon as the doctor said it – I had to call back and ask. Since then, I’ve learned to manage my symptoms, which include lung and skin issues and periods of intense fatigue. Those who know me will appreciate that the prospect of potentially losing the ability to play sport to any kind of level due to an incurable disease is very unnerving. I count myself lucky that I’m well enough to take on this challenge.”
But for many people with Sarcoidosis, they aren’t so fortunate. It’s a cruel and unpredictable disease. There’s no cure, no government funding and very little research. That’s why Oli and Sophie are running on Sunday.
They are proud to be raising money for Sarcoidosis UK – the only UK charity dedicated to supporting people living with this condition. Their work is vital: funding research, raising awareness, and helping people understand what’s happening to their bodies when no one else seems to know. Every penny goes towards supporting patients, improving diagnosis, and we join them in hoping, finding a cure.
It’s a cause close to the hearts of Oli and Sophie – literally. Running the Leeds Half Marathon together feels like a powerful way to stand up to a disease that’s tried to slow Oli down.
