Tom is running this year's Ipswich half marathon to raise money and awareness for the better support of cancer patients after his best friend Gary's own diagnosis.
"When I lace up my running shoes for the Ipswich half marathon this September, it's not just a race for me - it's a fight for my best friend, Gary Welsh, and everyone else impacted by bowel cancer."
After being suddenly rushed to hospital with sepsis in 2021, the chaos of the visit left everyone blindsided by the news: Gary had bowel cancer at the age of 34. Following this, Gary endured rounds of chemotherapy in 2022, however, it became apparent that the cancer had spread and become incurable.
Faced with such odds, Gary has shown nothing but resilience and determination. His NHS chemotherapy has been complemented by private treatments that are showing promising results, giving his friends and family hope in what often feels like an impossible situation. However, the cost of his private care - around £5,000 per month - has become an enormous financial challenge.
Through Gary's GoFundMe page, their community has worked tirelessly to raise funds to ensure that he can access every available treatment option, and Tom's participation in the half marathon can only bring them closer to giving Gary the best fighting chance possible.
"Running the Ipswich half marathon is my way of contributing to that fight. It's also a personal challenge for me, as I've never been a runner before. As I approach 40 and raise a young family, I recognise the importance of improving my own physical and mental health so that I can stay healthy for as long as possible. This race represents a new chapter in my life - one of resilience, determination, and self-improvement."
Gary's own strength and positivity works to inspire those around him every day, including his best friend Tom in his determination to raise funds for his treatment.
"He's not just my best friend; he's a reminder of why we must cherish every moment and fight for those we love."
