Thousands of participants, spectators and volunteers took to the streets of Sheffield this morning for one of the region’s most popular running events, the Sheffield Mutual Sheffield 10K.
It was another fantastic day for the city, centred around running, fundraising and community spirit. Thousands of participants ran for charity, many for a cause close to their hearts, but all with a goal to make a difference to others.
Set in the heart of the city centre, participants embarked on the scenic route from Arundel Gate, passing Endcliffe Park, Bingham Park and the Botanical Gardens and heading back to the centre for the all-important finish line celebrations.
Participants received brilliant support and a fantastic atmosphere from start to finish as supporters lined the route, with the finish line a buzz of excitement as loved ones greeted runners as they made their way along the home stretch.
Jamie Bellamy, Chief Executive at Sheffield Mutual said: "Congratulations to everyone who took part in this year’s Sheffield Mutual Sheffield 10K. Whether you were running, walking, or cheering from the sidelines, it was incredible to see the city come alive with such energy and community spirit. At Sheffield Mutual we were delighted to have around 30 colleagues, members and family take part, me included, and it was a privilege to share the day with so many people making a difference. The Sheffield 10K is always a special event, and this year was no exception.”
Those that took part were handed a goody bag of rewards, including post-run treats and a hard-earned bespoke medal at the finish line.
Whilst charity fundraising was at the heart of today, a number of the region’s leading athletes aimed to reach the top of the scoreboards for the 10K distance.
In the men’s race, Alfie Manthorpe triumphed with a time of 00:29:52.
Euan Brown took second place in a time of 00:32:01, followed by George O'Connor who took third place in a time of 00:32:02.
Laura Smith was first to the finish line in an impressive time of 00:35:42 in the women’s race and was pushed all the way by runners up Ellen Mcleod and Sarah Semmens, who clocked impressive times of 00:37:45 and 00:38:21 respectively.
But the real winners were the many local and national charities, who will benefit from the efforts of the many people who took part in good causes, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds in the process and making a vital difference.
Participants were encouraged to fundraise for one of the event’s official partner charities: Framework, the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Paces Charity, Rain Rescue, Roundabout, Sheffield Young Carers, Sheffield Futures, St Luke’s Hospice Sheffield, The Children’s Hosptial Charity and The Sheffield Cats Shelter.
More than just a day of running, the day also highlighted the incredible communities in and around the city, from running clubs, volunteers and schools, with all areas showing their support.
The event also included the Sheffield 10K Corporate Challenge, with a number of business organisations competing to be crowned Sheffield’s fastest business. The results of this event are expected in the coming days.
The Sheffield Mini and Junior runs followed the 10K, with children from the ages of 3 to 15 taking part in an uplifting display of energy, determination and enjoyment.
Tristan Batley-Kyle, Operations Director at Run For All, reflecting on the day, said: “A huge well done and thank you to all participants who joined us for one of South Yorkshire’s flagship running events, the Sheffield Mutual Sheffield 10K. It’s been a fantastic day of running and fundraising for participants of all abilities and ages.
“The enthusiasm and support from everyone involved, from the participants to the many spectators, sponsors, partners and volunteers, all ensured the day was a great success.”
Last year, Sheffield Mutual and Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All announced a multi-year partnership which will see Sheffield Mutual be the title sponsor for both the Sheffield 10K and the Sheffield Half Marathon for the next two years.
