Steven has been running since 2007 and has completed every Yorkshire Marathon since the first year.
We held a Q&A with Steven, ahead of race day, to learn how he fuels a marathon along with his must have running song. Read on to hear from the marathon running legend!
When did you start running?
“I started running in 2007 in order to lose some weight for my wedding and haven't stopped since.”
What made you sign up for the first Yorkshire Marathon?
“In 2013 I was doing a marathon a month charity challenge which I finished with the Berlin Marathon. The first Yorkshire marathon took place shortly after and I decided to keep my marathon streak going.”
What do you do the day before a marathon?
“Usually not much, maybe a short run or parkrun but then I’ll put my feet up for the rest of the day.”
What would be your piece of advice for first time marathon runners?
“Enjoy the finish line experience, there really is nothing quite like it.”
What do you treat yourself with after a race?
“Pie, chips and gravy washed down with a few beers!”
How do you fuel yourself during a race?
“Mainly energy gels but not too many. I'll also grab sweets that supporters hand-out on the course.”
What’s your must have running song?
“Florence and the machine - The Dog Days are Over.”
How does running add to your day-to-day life?
“I think running has made me more resilient, boosted my energy and focus and gives me a daily sense of achievement and balance.”
What’s your favourite Yorkshire Marathon memory?
“Crossing the finish line in 2015 and running a PB. I had only recently found out that I was going to be a Dad for the first time and I floated around that day. It was magic.”
