Amy is running the York 10K on August the 31st to raise money for Just4Children in order to provide equipment and therapy for her son Wilson, who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy.
Wilson will also be taking part in the junior race with his big sister and his dad.
Born nearly 10 weeks early, Amy was told that her son many never be able to talk, eat or move around due to the brain damage from his premature birth. However, thanks to his sheer determination, and the help of his big sister Ava, Wilson has defied all expectations, and is now the chattiest boy who loves his food and self-propels in his manual wheelchair extremely well. He now dreams of being a football manager in the future, perhaps for his favourite team, Manchester United.
“He is so resilient and has never let his disability get in the way of what he sets out to achieve and anyone that knows him would say the exact same”
Amy is overcoming her hatred of running, as well as her own health struggles with endometriosis in order to raise money for Wilson’s private treatments.
“I’ve never been a runner. In fact, I have a strong memory of going out for a run once with my brother when I was a teenager and vowed never to do it again! But something in me shifted recently and I decided that it’s never too late to start.”
Having had a surgery at 3 years old that was not available on the NHS, which has now allowed his greater freedom and comfort in his day-to-day life, Amy hopes to raise money for Wilson’s further treatment and equipment that might afford him the most opportunities possible.
“He’ll be my inspiration always in whatever challenges come our way.”
