Lauren is running this year's Ipswich half marathon to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust after her son, Arthur, was diagnosed with the condition at only 3 weeks old.
Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic condition that affects the movement of salt and water in and out of the cells; this creates a build-up of thick mucus on the lungs, digestive system, and other organs, which can cause a range of symptoms that affect the entire body.
For Arthur, this largely affects his lungs and pancreas. He requires daily physiotherapy and medication to help dislodge the mucus from his lungs and digest his food.
"Something as simple as a common cold, which is for many of us a minor inconvenience, can be a major threat to Arthur's health. It can quickly lead to a serious chest infection and require a hospital stay - a fear that is always in the back of my mind."
Witnessing these daily challenges is why Lauren is so passionate about supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. The charity funds vital research into improving care and researching effective treatment for the condition.
"When the training gets tough, I think about the courage and resilience Arthur shows every day battling this condition, and it gives me the strength to keep going...Running a half marathon is a huge mental and physical challenge for me, but it pales in comparison to the challenges Arthur faces every day, and I will be thinking of him with every step I take."
