Emily will be taking on the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon in memory of her Grandad, and to raise funds for the Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, who supported her Grandad and her family when they needed.
“My Grandad was always full of life, energy and humour.”
“As a young lad, he would cycle all the way to Blackpool, go camping, and play just about every sport going.”
Danielle’s Grandad always had a passion for exercise and sports, and what he loved most, was being outdoors, walking or riding his bike along the canal.
“Even after being told, he only had months to live, he carried on doing exactly that. I’m certain it was his determination to keep moving, to keep active, that gave us those precious extra months with him.”
For Emily, this is where her own love of fitness came from, and has inspired her to take on the challenge of running a marathon.
“I can’t think of a better way to honour him than by running the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon. 26.2 miles might sound daunting, but when I remember how strong and stubborn he was, it feels like the perfect tribute.”
When Emily’s Grandad became ill, he spent time at Manorlands Hospice, where the staff were incredible, caring for the whole family as well as her Grandad.
“They didn’t just care for him, they lifted hum up, helping stay the joker we all knew and loved.”
“They gave us the gift of still seeing him smile, still being himself, even in those final days.”
Manorlands Hospice offered emotional support, practical help and the kind of reassurance that allowed Emily’s family on spending time together.
“So I’m running this marathon for him – to celebrate his life, to say thank you to Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice for everything they did, and to ensure other families get the same care and support we did.”
