Former GB athlete Jack Carpenter is running the Ipswich Half Marathon this September after being diagnosed with incurable brain cancer.
Jack was diagnosed with a grade 4 astrocytoma, an aggressive and incurable form of brain cancer, at only 36 years old after having difficulty turning a key in a door. A visit to the GP led to a CT scan revealing three brain tumours.
"I had no headaches, pain, or seizures, so my diagnosis was the biggest shock imaginable, especially when you have two very young children...I've always been exceptionally fit and healthy, but cancer doesn't discriminate - it could happen to anyone."
But Jack has remained positive throughout his diagnosis and gruelling treatment, which he credits to his background as a GB Obstacle Course Racing athlete, and the mental resilience it requires. He is still focusing on staying active, and is now channelling his determination into the Ipswich Half Marathon as a testament to his own strength.
"This race is, for me, a personal milestone that proves anything is possible."
Jack hopes to inspire others who are facing similar challenges to remind them of the power of a positive mindset.
"I want to show people that, just because you've been diagnosed with cancer, life doesn't stop...It's amazing what you can achieve when you have a positive belief in yourself."
Jack's prognosis is also looking positive after his latest scan.
"The results from my latest scan came back as stable, which is a huge relief. My doctors are happy with the outcome."
