Christine first began running twenty years ago in 2006, just a few weeks after her mum was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.
"I remember Dad telling me the news - I'd never even heard of MND and had to do a Google search to find out."
MND is a fatal, rapidly progressing disease that attacks the nerves and leads to the wasting of the muscles, leaving those affected unable to walk, talk, eat, and ultimately breathe. With no effective treatment or cure for the disease, a third of those with MND die within a year of diagnosis, and over half within two years.
"I wanted to do something positive and constructive in the face of a situation where we felt helpless to influence the outcome."
Being proud of her North-East roots, Christine had always wanted to take part in the Great North Run, although she thought it well beyond her capabilities. However, she managed to secure a place through the MND Association.
"Whatever my capabilities, I could run, whereas those with MND can't."
It was her first half marathon, and the only one that her mum would be there for. She died eight days later, only ten months after being diagnosed with MND. But, Christine still holds her mum in her thoughts every day:
"She was the loveliest and kindest of people, had an infectious giggle, and loved the dance floor. She faced her illness with resilience, not wanting any sympathy, and kept her incredible sense of humour throughout."
In October of 2026, it will be 20 years since Christine's mum died, and she wanted to mark the year with a big challenge. It was her husband who came up with the "20 twenty-sixes in 2026" challenge - 20 marathons in one year.
"The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon was the first I signed up for; I couldn't possible do this challenge without this one on my list. It's such a special one for our charity, and the atmosphere and support are amazing."
Christine has done many other events and challenges not only for the MND Association, but also for Alzheimer's Research UK and Cancer Research UK, both diseases having affected her loved ones. She will continue to raise money and awareness for MND and other causes in the future.
"Until there's a cure, there is no finish line."
