Helen has lived with Type 1 diabetes her entire life. As she approaches her 50th birthday this July, she wanted to mark the occasion with something meaningful – a challenge that reflects her determination rather than any assumptions people might make about her condition.
That’s how her “50 for 50” idea came about.
To celebrate the milestone, Helen has set herself the goal of completing five 10k runs before she turns 50, with the Nottingham 10k forming one of the key events in her line‑up.
“I want to show people that diabetes isn’t a hindrance, and that if you set your mind to something, you can still achieve the things you want to do,” she said.
Helen credits her dad’s early advice as a guiding influence. As a child, he told her she should control her diabetes – and never let it control her. She has carried that mindset throughout her life, taking on everything from scuba diving to running.
Helen hopes her journey will inspire others living with long-term health conditions – encouraging them not to feel limited by assumptions, stigma, or fear.
She’s shown this in her own life – never letting her condition hold her back from joining the “Bramcote Belles” running group, where she has since found both support and wonderful new friends.
The team behind the Nottingham 10k, Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All, welcomed Helen’s challenge with enthusiasm. Known for encouraging inclusivity and community spirit, they are proud to have one of their runs play a part in her 50th birthday goal.
Run For All continues to champion a simple principle: their events are for everyone – all ages, all abilities, and all backgrounds. Their aim is to bring people together, celebrate personal achievement, and raise vital funds for charities across the UK.
Helen’s “50 for 50” challenge embodies exactly that spirit.
As she prepares for her birthday and the miles ahead, Helen hopes her story will encourage others to take on a challenge – whether that’s a run, or simply a personal goal they’ve been considering.
