Daisy will be running the Leeds Half Marathon on Sunday to raise money for Kidney Research UK, a charity that has been remarkable in their efforts to raise awareness about kidney disease and support those suffering with it.
Her son Charlie was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease -Nephronophthisis- at the age of eight and, until recently, had been waiting for a kidney transplant for over three years. Approximately 16,000 children are living with kidney disease, about 1,000 of whom are reliant on dialysis.
Despite a childhood of treatment plans, emergency hospital admissions and both emotional and severe physical pain, Charlie's optimism, strength and desire to seize every day has been so inspiring to Daisy. This has extended to his attitude towards raising funds and awareness for kidney disease and charities, including Kidney Research UK.
Throughout his medical journey, Charlie has worked with Kidney Disease charities, has volunteered at the Transplant Games, worked with medical professionals, and will soon be taking his message to Parliament as he meets with the UK’s Health Minister.
In the final weeks of Daisy’s training, Charlie got the phone call that he would finally receive a kidney transplant. This news was absolutely life-changing for him and following a successful surgery, Charlie is well on his way to making a full recovery. It is miraculous stories like this that demonstrate a healthy future is possible for those suffering with kidney disease, and has spurred his mums training on.
Daisy wants to continue Charlie's magnificent endeavours in fundraising for Kidney Research UK, to raise much needed funds and awareness about kidney disease and organ donation. She aims to run with the same perseverance, enthusiasm and unwavering determination that Charlie embodies every day.
