Fiona and her daughter Freya are gearing up for the Nottingham 10k as part of their training for the London Marathon later this year – an extraordinary challenge for Freya, who will be taking part in her wheelchair.
Born with spina bifida, Freya uses her wheelchair every day to live independently. She knows how life‑changing the right equipment can be, yet she also understands that many young people aren’t as fortunate. NHS provision, while essential, often cannot supply wheelchair users with equipment tailored to their individual needs.
Motivated by this inequality, Fiona and her daughter Freya are aiming to raise £4,200 for Whizz Kidz, helping to fund specialist wheelchairs and support for children and young people across the UK.
“Every donation will help ensure that young people who rely on wheelchairs can access the equipment they need, giving them greater independence, dignity, and quality of life,” Fiona said.
Whizz Kidz provides mobility equipment, skills programmes, and opportunities to help young wheelchair users live as independently and confidently as possible.
For the mother–daughter team, the Nottingham 10k marks an important milestone in their marathon preparation. A marathon is an enormous physical undertaking for anyone, but for Freya the challenge is even greater. Not only will she be taking part in her wheelchair, but she must also manage additional health complications – including the fact she has only one functioning kidney.
But she remains determined.
“Freya has dreamed of completing a marathon, and I want to help her achieve that,” Fiona shared. “This is a bucket‑list goal for her, and together we’re determined to make it happen while raising funds for a cause close to our hearts.”
Because of Freya’s health, the pair know that this may be their only window to take on such a challenge – making her dedication this year all the more powerful. Run For All are incredibly proud to have Freya participating in one of their events and are fully behind her journey.
