Leicester firefighter Taz Maguire will take on the Leicester 10k in full fire kit this March – all to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer Now.
Taz was moved to act after someone close to him was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, an experience he says deeply affected their family and wider circle of friends.
‘Seeing someone close to me go through a diagnosis last year and witnessing the impact on their family and on our friendship group, was humbling’ he said.
Determined to do something meaningful, Taz set himself the challenge of running in full firefighter kit – a tough, heavy load that adds a significant physical test to the 10k.
‘It pushed me to do my bit – not just to raise money, but to raise awareness,’ he added.
And the Leicester 10k is just one part of a much bigger personal challenge. This year alone, Taz has signed up for twelve 10ks, a half marathon and a stair-climb race, with plans to keep building towards completing a full marathon.
‘What started as one event has quickly turned into something much bigger. I want to keep going over the next few years until I reach a marathon.’
On race day, Taz will be cheered on by colleagues from his fire station, with a few hoping to join him on the course for part of the run.
He is also a proud member of the UK Pink Firefighters, a group of serving and retired firefighters who wear bright pink kit to raise money and spark conversations about breast cancer. Their mission is simple: stand out, get people talking, and turn those conversations into donations and awareness.
Although his new pink kit won’t arrive in time for the Leicester 10k, Taz will still be making a powerful statement in his standard gold firefighter gear.
