Nathan is attempting to set the new Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon ran by a type 1 diabetic.
Initially diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 19, Nathan struggled to come to terms with living with a lifelong condition. But this didn't stop his sporting aspirations; sport was always a big part of Nathan's life, and he wouldn't let his diagnosis change that.
He picked up running to better manage his diabetes, finding it extremely effective.
"I quickly made progress with my running, and I was able to let go of any limiting beliefs that I had imposed on myself' most notably, that I wouldn't be able to compete in sport again."
Starting with his local park runs, Nathan kept furthering the distance of his runs, and in 2015 ran an impressive 7 half marathons and 3 marathons within a year.
However, Nathan's diabetes continued to pose challenges for his training.
"Managing my diabetes alongside my training can be unpredictable and frustrating, and needs careful planning. Keeping my blood glucose levels in range is vitally important during a race, as hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia can completely hinder my race plan. The most problematic side effects are dehydration, fatigue, and confusion."
After rediscovering his passion for running following a break for nearly 10 years, Nathan is back at his training, proving himself once more.
"It takes a lot of dedication and discipline, but when I'm running long distances, it reminds me of how strong and resilient I am."
That is why Nathan is training to beat the current Guinness World Record of fastest marathon ran by a type 1 diabetic, which currently stands at 2:30:09.
"I am determined to show that it is never too late to pursue your dreams and achieve great things. Hopefully, I can inspire someone to lace up their shoes and start running, regardless of their age, gender, or health."
It stands ten years since Nathan last ran the Yorkshire Marathon, a race which holds special memories for him.
"I welcome everyone's support, and I am super excited for race day. I will have lots of friends and family at the finish line that have supported me on my journey back to running. Hopefully we can celebrate together with a new Guinness World Record."
