The decision to participate in the Leeds 10k stems from a deep desire to create a positive legacy from a heartbreaking loss for Jodie Stead and Matt Murphy.
As they lace up their running shoes and prepare for Leeds 10k, their hearts are filled with mixed emotions. This event isn't just a race; it's a poignant tribute to a cherished friend who left them too soon. In 2024, Matt's friend Lee tragically took his own life, leaving a profound impact on all that knew him.
Lee was a truly unique soul and a standout character in Matt's friendship group, they came together in high school during the late 90's. His infectious energy, distinct brand of quick wit and dead pan delivery has left all who knew him with a mountain of fantastic memories.
His absence is a constant reminder of the fragility of life and the hidden struggles and outwardly joyful individuals can face. Running in his memory is their way of honouring his life and raising awareness about men's mental health.
They are excited for the challenge and thought it would be a great opportunity to raise funds for Andy's Man Club who provide vital resources and support those in need. They said
"By running this race, we aim to start conversations about mental health, encouraging others to share their struggles and seek support. We want to show those who are struggling that they are not alone and there is hope even in the darkest of times"
Every step they take during this race will symbolise their commitment to mental health awareness and supporting Andy's Man Club to help individuals navigate their own challenges.
Running the race is also a personal journey of healing - especially for Matt. It's allowing him to channel his grief into something constructive, transforming pain into purpose. Each kilometre they run will be a reminder of Lee's life and the fun he brought. They will carry his memory with them, drawing strength from the laughter they shared and the fact he would probably be jokingly unimpressed with their finish time!
