Georgina is running the 2026 Leeds Half Marathon to raise money for Brain Tumour Research in honour of her husband, Nev, who is currently undergoing a grueling year-long programme of radiotherapy and chemotherapy for a brain tumour.
At 60 years old, Georgina doesn't describe herself as a natural long-distance runner, but she is pushing through her training to raise money for a good cause.
"I hope that the funds I raise will help all those in the future who hear the words 'You have a brain tumour'."
It took a year for Nev to get his diagnosis after countless appointments.
"GPs, clinics, and hospitals ignored his symptoms, and appropriate diagnostic tests were deemed unnecessary. Without constant pushing on our part, it would have taken a lot longer for that diagnosis to be given."
Nev struggles with daily side effects from his tumour, such as epileptic seizures, memory loss, poor word recall, communication and behavioural difficulties, loss of balance, and extreme tiredness. But this has only inspired Georgina even more.
"I am determined to rise to the challenge, just as Nev does every single day...He continues to inspire every day, now more than ever."
She has chosen to run Leeds Half, as Nev was a Vice Principal of the former Leeds Thomas Danby College, and an avid rugby player. His treatment is also taking place in Leeds.
But this isn't just about Nev's story. Brain tumour research is significantly underfunded, and UK Centres of Excellence are urgently needed.
"Every step I run will be to help those who, like us, are living with brain tumours, and in memory of those who have lost their life."
