A group from Homefield College is taking on the Leicester 10k as part of an ambitious challenge to raise £10,000 for new Community Hubs – safe, welcoming spaces where autistic young people can meet friends, build confidence and enjoy social activities without fear, judgement or isolation.
Around 15 runners and speed-walkers will be taking on the challenge to help bring these hubs to life. The project has been shaped directly by what young people say they desperately need.
One young person put it simply:
‘I want a social life. Somewhere I can go to make friends and do stuff at the weekends with people like me.’
Autistic young people are at significantly higher risk of loneliness and social isolation, and many have limited opportunities to socialise outside school or college hours. The Community Hubs aim to change this by offering structured, supportive environments where young people can build friendships, develop independence and feel part of a community.
Homefield College Principal and CEO, Tracey, said:
‘Many of our young people experience isolation, and the chance to build friendships outside the college day can make a profound difference to their wellbeing.’
The college is inviting individuals, community groups, clubs and workplaces to help them reach their £10,000 target. Every donation will take them one step closer to opening these essential hubs – and one step closer to giving autistic young people the sense of belonging they deserve.
Tracey added: ‘Our vision is to create dedicated spaces within our buildings where young people can meet, socialise, feel safe and enjoy time with others in evenings, at weekends and during holidays. These hubs will give them more opportunities to develop friendships, build independence and take part in meaningful activities in a supportive environment.’
