Last August, siblings Stevie and Tami sadly lost their sister, Lucy, at the age of just 40 to bowel cancer.
Lucy, an avid gym-goer at the peak of her fitness, had been training for her first 10k race in 2024 when she was suddenly rushed to hospital with acute abdominal pain. Despite experiencing no prior symptoms, Lucy was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer and tragically passed away in August 2025.
“It has been an absolutely devastating year,” the sisters said. “But by keeping Lucy always in our minds and thinking about how proud she would be of us, we keep on running – day by day, one foot in front of the other.”
While Stevie is a relatively seasoned runner, this will be Tami’s first ever 10k – a challenge made tougher by the fact she is running just a year postpartum. Still, she is determined to take part, with both sisters committed to honouring Lucy’s love of running and continuing the legacy she never got the chance to fulfil.
“Lucy was an amazing sister, woman, mother, and friend,’ they added. “She was tiny, but she filled every room she entered with positivity and laughter.”
Following Lucy’s death, Stevie and Tami raised £5,000 in her memory. They are now continuing their efforts by taking on the Leicester 10k and raising sponsorship in support of Bowel Cancer UK.

The sisters are encouraging donations to help fund Bowel Cancer UK’s vital work – improving care for people affected by bowel cancer and driving the vision of a future where no one has to suffer or die from this devastating disease. They also hope to raise awareness of the importance of seeking medical advice at any age if you experience symptoms of bowel cancer.
