Joshua is preparing to take on the Leeds Abbey Dash this autumn with a purpose: raising money and awareness for mental health support in memory of his stepdad.
Joshua was still young when he lost his stepdad to suicide, a loss that continues to shape his life today. He remembers his stepdad reaching out for professional help but facing long waiting times for the support he desperately needed.
Determined to help others who may be facing similar struggles, Joshua is using his Abbey Dash challenge to raise funds for Leeds Mind, with the hope that more people can access vital mental health support before it is too late.
So far, he has raised an impressive £875 for the charity.
Reflecting on the man who inspired his fundraising efforts, Joshua said: "He was a teacher, a family man and treated me like his own child. He shaped me into the man I am today and I know he'd be proud of what I'm doing."
Taking on the Leeds Abbey Dash holds particular significance for Joshua, as running was a huge part of his stepdad's life. By completing the challenge, he hopes to honour his memory while continuing to raise awareness of the importance of timely mental health support.
For Joshua, every mile is about more than reaching the finish line. It's an opportunity to remember someone who meant so much to him, support others who may be struggling and help create positive change.
Joshua said: "My family didn't deserve it, but most of all he didn't deserve it. We all miss him so much."
Through his fundraising and by sharing his story, Joshua hopes to encourage more conversation around mental health and help ensure that people can access the support they need when they need it most.
