Ellie was just 25 when she experienced the first of four transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs). She developed a severe headache, became dizzy, collapsed, lost her vision, and experienced weakness down the left side of her body. Despite displaying classic stroke symptoms, she was misdiagnosed and told she was experiencing a psychogenic episode linked to her mental health.
‘Although I knew something was seriously wrong, the true cause went unrecognised for six years,’ Ellie said.
Over the following years, Ellie continued to live with uncertainty. She became a mum, married her husband, Olly, and carried on working while searching for answers. But after suffering from three further TIAs and repeated collapses, she was finally referred to a stroke team in 2024.
Further investigations, including an echocardiogram with a bubble study, revealed that Ellie had a large patent foramen ovale (PFO) – a hole in the heart that had allowed blood clots to travel to her brain and cause her TIAs.
In October 2025, aged 32, Ellie underwent successful heart surgery at Royal Papworth Hospital to close the PFO.
‘The operation gave me a second chance at life,’ she said. ‘Recovery has been physically and emotionally challenging, but it has also shown me how resilient I am.’
Since her surgery, Ellie has achieved remarkable milestones. She has completed both a half marathon and an ultramarathon, proving to herself just how far she has come. Throughout her recovery, her personal trainer, Karen, has been a constant source of support, helping her rebuild her strength and confidence. She has also found encouragement and friendship through her running club, Run Scarborough.
‘Running with them twice a week has helped me trust my body again,’ Ellie said.
Alongside her recovery, Ellie has raised more than £900 for the Stroke Association to support stroke survivors and help raise awareness that stroke can happen at any age.
Reflecting on her journey, Ellie said: ‘My experience has taught me the importance of trusting your body, advocating for yourself and never giving up. Being listened to changed my life, and I hope my story encourages others to keep fighting for answers.’
