Dominic’s Altra Yorkshire Marathon challenge: a race that means more

For Dominic, the Altra Yorkshire Marathon 2026 is about far more than crossing a finish line. This is a race that represents resilience, recovery, and proving something to himself.

Reflecting on the significant of the event, Dominic said:

‘I’ve raced before and I’ll race again, but this one feels personal. I’m a Yorkshire boy, this is home turf, but it’s far from just another race.’

Born and raised in York, the 28-year-old has always found more than fitness through running. For him, it has been a way to navigate life’s challenges and find clarity through movement.

He explained, ‘I discovered running during a pretty dark time in my life and, through the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other, I underwent a transformative movement.’

However, that journey was brought to an unexpected halt at the end of 2024 when persistent knee pain refused to go away. Despite repeated attempts to return to running, his body continued to let him down.

After months of tests and consultations, Dominic was told he would need knee surgery.

The news was devastating.

‘It was terrifying. I’m not someone who wants to run, I’m someone who has to run.’

Although the operation was successful, the road back proved mentally as well as physically challenging. Dominic remembers feeling frustrated, low, and overwhelmed by self-doubt.

‘Even during rehab, it often left like giving up would have been the easiest thing to do.’

But giving up was never the ending he wanted. Instead, he found a target to aim for.

He entered the Altra Yorkshire Marathon 2026, giving himself what he describes as a ‘North Star’ throughout his recovery journey. Returning to race on home soil, surrounded by family, friends, and the people who matter most, became the motivation he needed to keep moving forward.

Dominic said:

‘This race isn’t really a race for me. It’s a point to prove to myself. Not that I’m a good runner or a bad runner, but simply that I’m a runner and that I can still do this.’

For Dominic, the Altra Yorkshire Marathon represents more than 26.2 miles. It is the culmination of two years of setbacks, recovery and emotional battles. It is his comeback, his release, and a chance to reclaim a part of himself that he feared he had lost.
