Katie and Colin take on Altra Yorkshire Marathon in memory of Nick

In November 2024, Nick was involved in a car accident that would unexpectedly change his family's lives forever. While recovering from the incident, doctors discovered that he had a brain tumour.

The following month, Nick underwent surgery to remove the tumour. Initially, the operation appeared to be a success and the family were hopeful about what lay ahead. However, in January 2025, they received devastating news. Nick was diagnosed with Grade 4 Gliosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer and a malignant variant of Glioblastoma.

Over the weeks that followed, Nick focused on spending precious time with those closest to him, including his wife Brenda, his children Colin and Kerry, and his three grandchildren, Natasha, JJ and Lucas.

Sadly, Nick passed away on 25 February 2025, surrounded by his family.

Wanting to honour his memory, Katie and Colin decided to take on the Altra Yorkshire Marathon. Through the challenge, they hope to raise awareness of the devastating impact brain tumours can have on families, while supporting Yorkshire's Brain Tumour Charity, which provides vital support to patients and their loved ones and funds clinical research across the region.

Reflecting on their decision to take on the 26.2-mile challenge, the pair said: "If Nick was still with us, we know he would be incredibly proud of us. He'd probably think we're a little bit insane for setting ourselves this challenge, but he'd support us every step of the way."

As they prepare for marathon day, Katie and Colin say they will carry Nick's memory with them throughout every mile.

"The marathon is for him," they said. "We know he'd be cheering us on from start to finish and telling us to keep going, even through the toughest moments. That's exactly what we'll do as we make our way to the finish line."

Through their fundraising efforts, the family hope to raise £3,000 for the charity, ensuring more families affected by brain tumours can access the support they need while helping to fund vital research for the future.
