A family from Lincolnshire is coming together to take on the Altra Yorkshire Marathon in support of their loved one, Callum Bavin, who was diagnosed with Addison’s disease on Christmas Day 2024 after suffering a life-threatening adrenal crisis.
Before becoming ill, Callum was fit, healthy and highly active, spending much of his free time in the gym. His diagnosis came as a huge shock to him and his family.
Addison’s disease is a rare, lifelong condition in which the adrenal glands do not produce enough essential hormones. While the condition can be managed with medication, it requires ongoing monitoring and specialist care.
Callum now travels regularly to London to receive private treatment, with the hope of eventually receiving a hydrocortisone pump – a treatment that could significantly improve his quality of life.
The physical and emotional impact of the condition, combined with the ongoing costs of specialist treatment and travel, has placed a significant financial burden on Callum and his young family.
Determined to help, Callum’s sister, Harriet, came up with the idea of taking on the Yorkshire Marathon to raise funds for his treatment. Joining Harriet on the start line will be her and Callum's cousins, Imogen and Finlay, along with her partner, Charlie.
Imogen said: "Every mile we run is helping to raise funds towards Callum’s specialist treatment and increasing awareness of Addison’s disease, which remains a little-known condition despite the life-changing impact it has on those living with it."
The family has already been overwhelmed by the support they have received. Thanks to the funds raised so far, Callum has been able to attend his first specialist consultation and is now due to spend three days in hospital undergoing further investigations to help determine the most effective long-term treatment plan.
Through their fundraising efforts, the family hope not only to support Callum’s treatment journey, but also to raise awareness of Addison’s disease and help other families facing similar challenges.
