Aimee, despite not being a runner, is taking part in this year’s Ipswich Half Marathon to raise money for Lighthouse Women’s Aid, giving back to the charity which provided them with so much help.
After a social care team was brought in to help her son, who has autism and ADHD, it became apparent that their family needed more help: that’s when Lighthouse Women’s Aid stepped in.
“I started with their Who’s In Charge programme, which gave me practical tools and confidence as a parent. From there, I was put on the Freedom Programme, where I gained knowledge and emotional support around domestic abuse. It was this programme that gave me the strength to leave my 10-year marriage”
The organisation also provided her children great support, offering counselling for her daughters, and enrolling her youngest in their Reconnect Together programme.
Lighthouse allowed Aimee’s family to rebuild their life, with their support leading to the family getting their own home, and allowing Aimee to start her own business.
Now happily remarried, the family is now “safe, happy and thriving”, and Aimee hopes that her children will join her in running when they are old enough to give back to the organisation.
“I’m running 13 miles not just for me, but for every woman and child who still needs that lifeline”
