Martyn took on the Lincoln Half Marathon in support of Nottingham University Hospitals Charity after his daughter, Hope, was born 10 weeks premature at just 30 weeks.
Hope's arrival came unexpectedly and was followed by a series of complications, including difficulties maintaining her oxygen levels and a lumbar puncture 3 months after being born. She was also showing signs of not feeding, vomiting her formula and showing constant pain. During this incredibly challenging time, the team at Nottingham University Hospitals' Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provided life-saving, around-the-clock care for Hope, while also offering invaluable support to the whole family.
Alongside caring for their newborn daughter, Martyn and his partner were balancing the needs of their four-year-old son, who has severe non-verbal autism, learning difficulties and epilepsy, as well as their other child. The support provided by the NICU allowed the family to focus on caring for their children and maintaining some normality during an otherwise overwhelming period.
Reflecting on their experience, Martyn said: "The team provided around-the-clock care for Hope, giving us the reassurance and support we needed so we could continue working and look after our other children."
Today, the family feel incredibly fortunate to have Hope home with them and thriving, thanks in large part to the exceptional care she received. Hope is currently 8 months, but the size of a 4 month old, but doing very well and a happy baby. However, the family are also aware that not every family experiences the same outcome.
Wanting to give back and honour the care and compassion shown to them, Martyn created the "Run For Hope" challenge, pledging to complete 100 race miles in 100 days to raise funds for the charity.
The challenge saw Martyn take part in a range of events across the country, including the Lincoln Half Marathon. Beginning on 12 July, he successfully completed the challenge on 11 October, turning his gratitude into an inspiring fundraising achievement in Hope's name.
