Suffolk Firefighters Go the Extra Mile for Fire Fighters Charity

The Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service team is training for this year’s Larking Gowen Ipswich Half Marathon, taking on the challenge to raise funds for Fire Fighters Charity, which provides vital physical, mental and social wellbeing support to serving and retired members of the UK fire and rescue community, as well as their families.

As emergency first responders, firefighters regularly face physically demanding conditions and emotionally challenging situations. Recent wildfires across the UK, including at Dunwich Heath in Suffolk, have placed significant pressure on crews, requiring sustained efforts over long periods and support from fire and rescue services across the country. While major incidents such as these highlight the demands of the role, the everyday realities of emergency response can also take a lasting toll on those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.

It is for this reason that the team has chosen to support Fire Fighters Charity, helping to ensure that firefighters, past and present, can access specialist support whenever they need it.

The Larking Gowen Ipswich Half Marathon has become a key fixture in the team's fundraising calendar, but this year they are aiming to make an even bigger impact. To raise awareness and encourage donations, the team will complete the 13.1-mile course carrying a specially adapted extension ladder, modified by their workshops team specifically for the event, while some participants will take on the challenge wearing full firefighting personal protective equipment.

Speaking about the challenge, the team said: "We hope this unique fundraiser will capture the attention of runners and spectators alike while showcasing the teamwork, commitment and resilience that are at the heart of the fire and rescue service. Every donation will help Fire Fighters Charity continue providing essential support to firefighters and their families when they need it most."
